ACM Hypertext & Social Media Conference 2024

ACM Hypertext & Social Media Conference 2024 – REGISTRATION

The ACM Hypertext Conference is one of the oldest annual scientific events dedicated to the intersection of computer systems with humanities, literature, and storytelling in the digital medium.

In 2024, the Faculty of Polish and Classical Philology at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań will host the conference. It will take place from September 10 to 14 at Collegium Maius. Submissions for the conference should be sent by March 31, 2024.

The acronym ACM stands for "Association for Computing Machinery," one of the world's oldest computer science associations. Hypertext, on the other hand, is a technology that enables the creation, browsing, and interlinking of statements, documents, and databases in a nonlinear way, adapting to the user's needs. As such, hypertext is considered a deep structure and a paradigm of modern digital communication. In the context of literary studies, reflection on hypertext includes topics such as interactive storytelling, narrative in video games, digital editions of literary classics, enhanced academic publications, collaborative creation, and the exploration of animated digital poetry, etc.

The history of the ACM Hypertext conference dates back to the early 1980s. The first Hypertext conference was organized in 1987. It was at this event that, along with presentations of classic hypertext systems such as Xanadu, Intermedia, NLS Augment, the young writer Michael Joyce demonstrated the original version of his famous novel afternoon, a story. It was also at a related ACM Hypertext conference held a few years later in Paris that Tim Berners-Lee presented the prototype of the World Wide Web. Today's ACM Hypertext conferences continue this legacy, focusing on innovations in the development of hypertext systems and user interfaces in the latest technological contexts, while also exploring the history and evolution of digital communication and storytelling in the digital space.

Each year, the conference showcases innovations related to technology, human-computer interaction, and the scientific and practical aspects of designing and analyzing hypermedia systems.
